Fundraising FAQs

Q. Why don't donations I collect receive a dollar-for-dollar discount?

 A. HEFY is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization, therefore donations made to HEFY are tax deductible. Participants are able to solicit donations for HEFY in order to receive a discount on their expedition. Donations received do not qualify for a dollar-for-dollar discount because they are given on an unfettered basis to the organization rather than to a specific individual.

Q. I want to go on a HEFY trip , but don't think I can come up with the money. What options do I have?

A. Many participants have gone on an HEFY trip at little or no expense to them. It's a lot easier than you think. Check out our Fundraising Page for more information.

Q. Can you send in donations from Canada?

A. HEFY can accept donations from Canada but they are not tax deductible for income reported in Canada. However, if the Canadian donor receives income in the US, he/she can receive a full tax deduction on any taxes paid to the US. Also, there is a $5 converting currency charge for Canadian checks. We strongly recommend Canadians to donate online using a credit card.

Q: I don't think I can come up with that much money, what do you suggest?

A. See our Fund Raising Information for the details.  Of course, the sooner you start the easier it will be.  To help you, there is also a fundraising packet available.  This packet contains hints, sample letters and other ideas to make the fundraising easier.  It also explains that Humanitarian Experience for Youth is a non-profit organization and the donations to HEFY are tax-deductible.

Q: What if the trip I want fills up before I raise enough money to make the $500 reservation payment?

A: We suggest asking someone to help you make that $500 deposit to hold your spot. Once you have fundraised the full amount your deposit will be refunded to you. Fundraising is a lot easier than you think. Check out our Fundraising Page for great tips and ideas.
