As the poorest country in South America, Bolivia is in great need of humanitarian assistance. You will serve in a small town on the outskirts of Santa Cruz.  Many people in the town live in lean-to homes made of scrapwood and other materials they can find, and families are often unable to send their children to schools because it would take hours to get there.

Brazil is the largest country in Latin America with land that is rich in natural resources. In the past twelve years the country has gained recognition as one of the most powerful economies in the developing world and became a focus of international attention when it was selected to host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. However, while some Brazilians have reaped the benefits of this growth, high levels of income inequality pervade and over one-fifth of the country lives below the poverty line.

Cape Verde is an island country, spanning 10 islands off the coast of Western Africa.  Unlike much of continental Africa, the Cape Verde islands have an arid climate and are generally devoid of all vegetation and wildlife. Cape Verdeans are a warm friendly people that welcome Americans.

The Dominican Republic frequently receives the title "Best Place to Travel," with its white sandy beaches that extend over hundreds of miles of coastline and its warm inviting people. However, the country also faces many challenges due to high poverty levels and weak infrastructure, and many basic needs of its citizens are unmet.

Famous for its location on the Equator, Ecuador features a diverse landscape that features the Andes Mountains, coastal plains, jungles, and the Galapagos Islands. Celebrating our third year in the country, H.E.F.Y. will be implementing several exciting changes to the program including young men and young women on the expedition, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.

Paraguay is a developing country which houses the world's largest hydroelectric dam. With the Gran Chaco plains in the west and hilly forests in the east, it offers some diverse scenery, and the richness of the indigenous Guarani culture distinguishes it from the rest of Latin America.

The Kingdom of Tonga is warm and beautiful, as are its people, giving it the nickname the "Friendly Island Kingdom of Tonga." Despite its ideal weather and picturesque beauty, Tonga is very much an underdeveloped country with needs for humanitarian work. Hurricanes and destitution forced many people from the remote outer islands to move onto the mainland, where they were placed in the most impoverished communities without much assistance.

Base Cost: $500 to register • Age: 16-19 • Location: Varies  

To reserve a spot on the waiting list, please fill out the application and pay the $500 deposit. This deposit is refundable if you aren't interested in any of the trips that become available. When any participant is unable to go on his/her reserved expedition, we will make the space available for those on a waiting list. Everyone on the waiting list will be offered a spot on at least one of the expeditions.
