Belize 2013

Overview

Belize is a natural wonderland. Situated on the Caribbean Sea, its eastern shore is blessed with the second largest barrier reef in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. It is also known for its ancient ruins amid beautiful jungles in the west. The warm and friendly people of Belize make up the only official English-speaking country in Central America, though most speak Spanish as well.

In Belize, you will build a crucial addition to an elementary school in the small town of Corozal. Most of the school buildings and classrooms in the area are small, deteriorating, and not conducive to quality learning. Your HEFY group will be a crucial part of helping this community provide opportunities for its children to learn. You will also spend one weekend visiting the exotic island of Ambergris Caye where you will snorkel in the National Marine Reserve, and a second weekend tubing through jungle caves in underground rivers and touring Book of Mormon ruins.

Overview

The sights and scenes of Bolivia's landscapes are enough alone to change anyone's life. This Spanish speaking country includes the stunning peaks of the Andes Mountains, the beauty of Lake Titicaca, and the thick jungles of the Amazon. The majority of Bolivia's population is indigenous people who have inhabited the country for generations. In addition to playing lots of soccer with the locals and swimming in waterholes in the tropical jungle, you will get to see Machu Picchu, otherwise known as the ancient "Lost City of the Incas." We will make the powerful journey to Machu Picchu, Peru before heading off to our main destination of Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

As one of South America's poorest countries, Bolivia is in great need of humanitarian assistance. We will serve in a small town on the outskirts of Santa Cruz where many people live in lean-to homes made of various scraps of material, and where families are often unable to send their children to schools that are too far away. The community members are anxiously waiting for the HEFY groups to help complete the building of a school that they started three years ago but never finished, leaving the walls to crumble and their hopes for a school to diminish.

In addition to helping all the children of this community, you will be able to make friends with the many LDS youth in the area of Santa Cruz. The  many ward and youth activities in Bolivia will strengthen your testimony of the Gospel and help prepare you for missions, college, families, and future callings.

Overview

Ecuador is HEFY's only exclusively young women expedition, designed to complement the Young Women in Excellence program and to give participants a unique opportunity to form lasting friendships. On this trip you will be able to visit ancient Incan ruins, zipline through cloud forests, swim under waterfalls, and visit the capital city of Quito and the Middle of the World.

We will be working together in the charming city of Cuenca which lies 8,000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by mountains on all sides. There are many disadvantaged and disabled children living in cities like Cuenca, but there are not enough resources to provide social and emotional support to these children. You will build new housing facilities at an orphanage that primarily serves severely disabled and disadvantaged children which will allow their volunteer program to expand and provide more support for the children. You will get to see the children every day at the work site, and have the opportunity to volunteer in the orphanage twice each week. The orphanage experience is a powerful one that changes the way young women view themselves and the world.

Weekends and evenings will include activities with local church members, a stake dance and a trip to the Temple in Guayaquil to perform baptisms for the dead.

Fiji East 2013

Overview

Fiji is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the world to visit. On weekends you will enjoy one of the pristine outer islands, snorkel with colorful fish, try your hand at traditional net fishing, all while interacting with one of the warmest and friendliest cultures of the world. To make the experience extra authentic, your first weekend you will stay in a traditional “bure” (a thatch roof building) near the beach.

Although it is one of the most beautiful places to visit, Fiji faces many hygiene and health-related issues. This summer, you'll be working alongside villagers in a village outside of Suva to add bathrooms to homes that are currently without plumbing, including flush toilet systems. Your efforts will help the people of Fiji reach a new standard of living. The involvement of great members of the LDS Church on the island is a bonus for everyone on the trip! You'll enjoy going to church and having FHE in the homes with the local members.

Fiji West 2013

Overview

Our expeditions to Fiji have been so successful that we’ve added a new Fiji location on the west side of the island. Similar to our East Fiji expeditions, you will get to enjoy one of the pristine outer islands, play on the beautiful beaches, and interact with one of the warmest and friendliest cultures of the world.

The West Fiji expeditions will also follow the same project model as East Fiji in order to combat the many hygiene and health-related issues. You’ll work closely with villagers on the outskirts of Nadi to add bathrooms to the homes in small villages without plumbing. You’ll quickly feel an outpouring of love and friendship from these people that will help motivate you in your service and strengthen your testimony of Gospel principles. *For more info see Fiji East description.

Peru 2013

Overview

Peru was once the center of the ancient Incan Empire, and today it is known for being home to one of the world’s most intriguing and breathtaking sites; the ancient city of Machu Picchu. We will make the journey 8,000 feet above sea level to see this “Lost City of the Incas” as well as pay a visit to Cusco, South America’s oldest continually inhabited city.

Our Peru expeditions offer one of the most dramatic looks at poverty as well as the most enthusiastic reception from the local LDS Wards and Stakes. Your service project will take place in Peru’s capital city of Lima, which has over 40 LDS Stakes in the city alone, as well a vast amounts of poverty. This year, youth with HEFY will return to continue building classrooms in an enthusiastic and growing elementary school that really needs humanitarian assistance. The absence of facilities for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students forces the school to cram its students into any available open rooms in churches, libraries or other off-site buildings. In addition, you will help the school's teachers implement an English program by volunteering in the classroom twice a week.

The presence of an LDS Temple in the city of Lima will allow extra activities with members of the Church, including a chance to do baptisms for the dead, and increase your spiritual experience. The community we serve and the wards we attend show so much appreciation to the HEFY groups that you are bound to see your potential and true worth during the Peru expeditions.

Dominican Republic 2013

Overview

The Dominican Republic frequently receives the title "Best Place to Travel." With its white sandy beaches that extend over hundreds of miles of coastline, and its warm inviting people, the Dominican Republic is one of the most popular Caribbean islands. However, the country also faces many challenges due to high poverty levels and weak infrastructure, particularly in its schools.

HEFY volunteers will build the first phase of a permanent school facility which will include two desperately needed classrooms and a bathroom block for 700 students.  This new facility will have a cement roof which will also provide a hurricane shelter for the students.  Without the help of HEFY this humble community has no way to build a better school.

On the weekends, the expedition will explore the beauty of this island nation and enjoy the surrounding natural wonders.  First, the group will visit Ocean World, then travel to the jungle, to climb and jump into the pools of the phenomenal 27 Waterfalls Park.  After a full week of work, the participants will welcome a relaxing day of snorkeling and sailing the beautiful Caribbean reefs. A trip to the Temple in Santo Domingo along with firesides, dances and activities with the local youth will make this expedition life changing for everyone.

Tonga 2013

Overview

While the Kingdom of Tonga is warm and beautiful, the people are even more so. In fact, the island is often called the “Friendly Island Kingdom of Tonga.” During a two day excursion to a Fijian island, you will be able to swim with sharks, climb to the infamous rambling rock, snorkel in the lagoon, and see beaches that are often the site for movie sets. While in Tonga you will see fire throwing cultural performances, as well as local festivals, shows and sporting events. The people of Tonga love to celebrate, and they will very happy to share everything with you.

Despite its perfect weather and picturesque beauty, Tonga is very much an undeveloped country with many needs for humanitarian work. Hurricanes and destitution forced many people from the remote outer-islands to move onto the mainland, where they were placed in the most impoverished communities without much assistance. For your service project you will build houses and toilets in this area where most of the residents don't have electricity and plumbing, and where they work night and day to afford sending their kids to school. The presence of the LDS Church is strong here and you will have many spiritual experiences, as well as opportunities to interact with members your age who will share the Polynesian culture with you.
