Belize 2012
| Overview Belize is a natural wonderland. Situated on the Caribbean Sea, its eastern shore is blessed with the second largest barrier reef in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. It is also known for its ancient ruins amid beautiful jungles in the west. The warm and friendly people of Belize make up the only official English-speaking country in Central America, though most speak Spanish as well. In Belize, you will build a crucial addition to an elementary school in a small village on the outskirts of Corozal. This new schoolroom will be an addition to the existing one-room school library and will allow the school to qualify for a government program that will bring computers to the school for the first time. The Humanitarian Experience group will spend one weekend visiting the exotic island of Ambergris Caye where you will snorkel in the National Marine Reserve, and a second weekend tubing through jungle caves in underground rivers and touring Book of Mormon ruins. Ecuador 2012
Service Location: Cuenca, Ecuador More Information: | Overview Ecuador is the newest location for Humanitarian Experience, and it is bound to be an unforgettable experience. Exclusively for young women, this expedition is designed to complement the Young Women in Excellence program and to give participants a unique opportunity to form lasting friendships. On this trip you will be able to see many of Central America’s natural wonders, swim under waterfalls, and visit the capital city of Quito and the Middle of the World. We will be working together in the charming city of Cuenca which lies 8,000 feet above sea level, surrounded by mountains on all sides, and has one of the world’s most temperate climates throughout the whole year. There are many disadvantaged and disabled children living in cities like Cuenca, but there are not enough resources to provide social and emotional support to these children. Not only will you build an addition to the local orphanage but you will have the opportunity to work with and serve the children living there. The one-on-one nurturing you will provide to the disadvantaged and disabled children, combined with a trip to the temple in Guayaquil is bound to be life-changing. Fiji 2012
| Overview Fiji is considered one of the most beautiful islands to visit. On weekends you will enjoy one of the pristine outer islands, swim in waterfalls and play on the beautiful beaches, all while interacting with one of the warmest and friendliest cultures of the world. To make the experience extra authentic, you will stay in a traditional “bure” (a thatch roof building) near the beach. Fiji faces many hygiene and health-related issues. This summer, you'll be working alongside villagers in the town of Nausori to add bathrooms to homes that are currently without plumbing, including flush toilet systems. Your efforts will help the people of Fiji reach a new standard of living. The involvement of great members of the LDS Church on the island is a bonus for everyone on the trip! Peru 2012
| Overview Peru was once the center of the ancient Incan Empire, and today it is known for being home to one of the world’s most intriguing and breathtaking sites; the ancient city of Machu Picchu. We will make the journey 8,000 feet above sea level to see this “Lost City of the Incas” as well as pay a visit to Cusco, South America’s oldest continually inhabited city. Your service project will take you to Peru’s capital city of Lima, which currently faces a drastic increase in poverty. This year, youth with Humanitarian Experience for Youth will build much needed classrooms for a school in an impoverished suburb of Lima that has virtually no space to fit all of its students. The absence of facilities for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students forces the school to cram its youngest students into classrooms. You will build these young children a place where they can learn and play, giving them the beginning to a better education. In addition, the presence of an LDS temple in the city of Lima will allow extra activities with members of the Church, including a chance to visit the temple. Tonga 2012
| Overview While the Kingdom of Tonga is warm and beautiful, the people are even more so. In fact, the island is often called the “Friendly Island Kingdom of Tonga.” During a two day excursion to a Fijian island, you will be able to swim with sharks, climb to the infamous rambling rock, snorkel in the lagoon, and see beaches that are often the site for movie sets. Unfortunately, not all of the school facilities in Tonga are conducive to offering the best education. For your service project you will repair elementary school classrooms and add a new bathroom to the school. The presence of the LDS Church is strong here and you will have many opportunities to interact with members your age who will share the Polynesian culture with you.
