As the poorest country in South America, Bolivia is in great need of humanitarian assistance. You will serve in a small town on the outskirts of Santa Cruz. Many people in the town live in lean-to homes made of scrapwood and other materials they can find, and families are often unable to send their children to schools because it would take hours to get there.
The community members are anxiously waiting for the H.E.F.Y. groups to help complete the building of a school that was started three years ago but never finished due to lack of funds, leaving the walls to crumble and their hopes for a school to diminish.
Besides helping the children of this community, you will be able to make friends with the many LDS youth in the area of Santa Cruz. The ward and youth activities in Bolivia will strengthen your testimony of the Gospel and help you prepare for missions and future callings.
In addition to working hard and playing lots of soccer with the locals, you will get to visit Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. There, you will go on a boat excursion to the Isla del Sol. You will spend the night on the island and visit ancient ruins, walk along a trail from the pre-Columbian era, and visit the beautiful Challapampa beach. You will then travel to La Paz where you will explore artisan street markets, watch a cultural show, and tour through the city. During your second weekend, you will visit Cochabamba to do baptisms for the dead at the temple. While there, you will have the opportunity to visit the Palacio Portales, an exquisite mansion built for a tin baron in the ealry 20th century and Cristo de la Concordia, one of the largest statues of Christ in the world.
