Dominican Republic 2013
| Overview The Dominican Republic frequently receives the title "Best Place to Travel." With its white sandy beaches that extend over hundreds of miles of coastline, and its warm inviting people, the Dominican Republic is one of the most popular Caribbean islands. However, the country also faces many challenges due to high poverty levels and weak infrastructure, particularly in its schools. HEFY volunteers will build the first phase of a permanent school facility which will include two desperately needed classrooms and a bathroom block for 700 students. This new facility will have a cement roof which will also provide a hurricane shelter for the students. Without the help of HEFY this humble community has no way to build a better school. On the weekends, the expedition will explore the beauty of this island nation and enjoy the surrounding natural wonders. First, the group will visit Ocean World, then travel to the jungle, to climb and jump into the pools of the phenomenal 27 Waterfalls Park. After a full week of work, the participants will welcome a relaxing day of snorkeling and sailing the beautiful Caribbean reefs. A trip to the Temple in Santo Domingo along with firesides, dances and activities with the local youth will make this expedition life changing for everyone.
