Peru 2013
| Overview Peru was once the center of the ancient Incan Empire, and today it is known for being home to one of the world’s most intriguing and breathtaking sites; the ancient city of Machu Picchu. We will make the journey 8,000 feet above sea level to see this “Lost City of the Incas” as well as pay a visit to Cusco, South America’s oldest continually inhabited city. Our Peru expeditions offer one of the most dramatic looks at poverty as well as the most enthusiastic reception from the local LDS Wards and Stakes. Your service project will take place in Peru’s capital city of Lima, which has over 40 LDS Stakes in the city alone, as well a vast amounts of poverty. This year, youth with HEFY will return to continue building classrooms in an enthusiastic and growing elementary school that really needs humanitarian assistance. The absence of facilities for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students forces the school to cram its students into any available open rooms in churches, libraries or other off-site buildings. In addition, you will help the school's teachers implement an English program by volunteering in the classroom twice a week. The presence of an LDS Temple in the city of Lima will allow extra activities with members of the Church, including a chance to do baptisms for the dead, and increase your spiritual experience. The community we serve and the wards we attend show so much appreciation to the HEFY groups that you are bound to see your potential and true worth during the Peru expeditions.
